How To Open and Convert Office 2007 Docx FIles Into Office 200,2003 Doc Files

Some people nowadays are using Microsoft Office 2008 in creating their office applications. The utilization of this new version of office applications poses problems regarding compatibility and portability of office documents. If you have noticed, Office 2008 documents contains and extended character at the end of their file types (docx for doc, xlsx for xls, pptx for ppt). All of these new file extensions are not compatible with the previous versions of the Microsoft Office suite. There was even an instance when I forgot to save my document as an office 2003 compatible document. When I transferred to the workstation which uses an older version of Microsoft Office, I have encountered problems in opening my document.

Last night, I was able to find a way to convert office 2008 files to office 2003 compatible files without the use of any office 2008 applications. These conversion tools are online applications, which makes it more robust in terms of portability.

  • Docx2Doc is a web service which offers free conversion of docx documents to doc format. http://www.docx2doc.com/
  • Zamzar is another service which offers document conversions. The advantage of Zamzar is its capability to convert not only office documents, but also images, music, archives and videos as well. http://zamzar.com/
  • Thanks to Michael for sharing this resource. TDS Converter offers free conversion of docx to doc. http://converter.tds.lv/

How to Create Users and User in Windows Server 2008 Active Directory

You probably already know that a User Account in Active Directory is an Active Directory Object, or simply said, a record in an AD database. Most of the time we create user accounts for people, however user accounts can also be created for applications or processes.
User accounts allow a person to access resources on a network. But we can just as easily deny access to certain resources on the network through the user account. That’s why, User Account Objects are quite important and very useful.
Today I’ll show you how easy it is to create a new user account, create a user template and how to use a template in Server 2008 Active Directory. Next week we’ll discuss User Groups and Organizational Units. Now, let’s get started with creating a user account.

How To Create a New User Account in Active Directory

1. To start let’s go ahead and open up Server Manager
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 1
2. Next we will open up the Roles section, next to Active Directory Users and Computerssection and finally the Active Directory Users and Computers. You should now see your domain name.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 2
3. We are going to click on our Users section where we are going to create a new User Account. To do so, right-click on the blank section, point to New and select User.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 3
4. In this window you need to type in the user’s first name, middle initial and last name. Next you will need to create a user’s logon name.
In our example we are going to create a user account for Billy Miles and his logon name will be bmiles. When done, click on the Next button.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 4
5. In the next window you will need to create a password for your new user and select appropriate options.
In our example we are going to have the user change his password at his next logon. You can also prevent a user from changing his password, set the password so that it will never expire or completely disable the account.
When you are done making your selections, click the Next button.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 5
6. And finally, click on the Finish button to complete the creation of new User Account.

How To Create a User Template in Active Directory

A user template in Active Directory will make your life a little easier, especially if you are creating users for a specific department, with exactly the same properties, and membership to the same user groups. A user template is nothing more than a disabled user account that has all these settings already in place. The only thing you are doing is copying this account, adding a new name and a password.
You may have multiple user templates for multiple purposes with different settings and properties. There is no limit on the number of user templates, but keep in mind that they are there to help you, not to confuse you, so keep in mind less is better.
To create a user template, we are going to create a regular user account just like we did above. A little note here, you may want to add an * as the first character of the name so it floats at the top in AD and is much easier to find.
1. To start out, right-click on the empty space, point to new, and select User.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 7
2. Type in the user’s name (with asterisks if so desired) and click Next.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 8
3. Create the template’s password and do not forget to check the box next to the Account is disabled option. When ready, click Next.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 9
4. Once the account is created, you can go ahead and add all the properties you need for that template. To do so, double-click on that account and navigate to a specific tab. Once done click OK.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 10

How To Use a User Template in Active Directory

1. Now in order to use that user template, we are going to select it, copy it and add the unique information such as user name, password, etc.
We can do that for as many users as needed. Let’s start by right-clicking on the template and selecting Copy.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 11
2. Next we are going to enter the user’s name, login and password information while making sure the checkbox next to Account is disabled is unchecked.
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 12
Windows Server 2008 Active Directory - User Accounts 13
3. Once we finish, our new user account is created with all the properties of the template account. Now wasn’t that easy!

How to Install and Configure Domain Controller on Windows Server 2008 Machine

16Promoting Windows Server machine to domain controller is one of tasks that (almost) every system administrator had done in his life. Usingdcpromo tool, promoting Windows Server 2008 R2 machine to domain controller is quite easy, and in this post I will show you how step-by-step promoting Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system to domain controller. I’m doing this in my test lab on one of my virtual machines and I’ll create local domain “virtual”. I won’t write much about the process, because I have screenshot of every step that you have to take, so don’t think you’ll have problems following the steps. Let’s start.
First we’ll start program called dcpromo. Just go to Start, and in search field write dcpromo and open it.
1
2
You’ll have to wait few minutes, and then you’ll see “Welcome to the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard”. Just click on Next twice.
34
Write the name of your domain. In my example I used virtual.local.
6
As I forest functional level I chose Windows Server 2008 R2. In details panel you can see the description of every forest functional level and based on that you can decide which one is the best for you.
78
In the beginning, my virtual machine had dynamically assigned IP address, and as I installed DNS server on it, dcpromo told me that it would be good to have static IP address for DNS server. If you have same situation, I recommend you to do the same thing.
910
In this step you can choose where to store Database, Log Files and SYSVOL. It’s recommended to put the database and log files to separate volumes.
11
Enter the password for you domain Administrator account.
121314
At the end, you need to restart your PC.
15
After the restart, we can now login to the domain as the Administrator.

How to Export and Import Entire ISA Server 2006 Backup With Easy Steps

ISA Server 2006 makes it easy to back up the entire configuration or parts of the configuration for backup purposes in case of emergency or to simply back up a configuration to clone this configuration with another ISA Server. ISA Server 2006 uses the VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) writer that exports the configuration to an .xml file and instructs the VSS provider to back up this XML-file. In case of a restore, the VSS provider uses this file to restore the configuration, using the ISA Server import functionality. After a backup or import is complete, the ISA Server VSS writer deletes the .xml file.
The following screenshot shows the Backup and Restore Feature of ISA Server 2006. At this point, it is possible to back up the entire ISA Server 2006 configuration with or without confidential information.

Figure 1:
ISA Import / Export configuration
ISA Server 2006 provides a wizard which will help you export the configuration you want to back up. This wizard will help you to export the entire configuration with and without confidential information.

Figure 2:
ISA Export Wizard
If you want to export confidential information like user passwords, RADIUS shared secrets, etc; you must enter a password, because this password is used to encrypt the export file.

Figure 3:
Export confidential data
If you select Export user permission settings, the backup also contains administrative roles delegated to users and groups.
You can view the exported XML file with Microsoft Internet Explorer or any other XML capable viewer.
Tip:If you have the expertise, it is possible to modify parts of the XML file to customize some settings. After that it should be possible to import the modified XML file.

Figure 4:
The XML file

Import process

After exporting the configuration to an XML file, you can use it for a normal backup or in case of emergency, or you can use the configuration to install a new ISA Server and restore the previously created backup file.

Figure 5:
Export path
You should only import XML configuration files from a trusted source. Any other files may contain malicious code. There are some websites on the Internet that offer XML files for protocol definitions or entire firewall rules for specific or exotic protocols.
During the Import process you can specify if you want to Import or Overwrite (restore) the configuration. The overwrite process overwrites the entire existing configuration and is used to restore a damaged configuration.

Figure 6:
Import or Overwrite the configuration
If you exported the ISA Server 2006 configuration with confidential information, you have to enter the password that you gave the export file if you want to import this confidential information.
After a successful import, click Apply to save the configuration.
Please note:It is not possible to back up an ISA Server 2006 Standard configuration and import it to ISA Server 2006 Enterprise and vice versa, because the internal format of these versions is different.

Other things to back up

What else should we have in our backup plan? It is always a good idea to back up the entire ISA Server with a backup program like the built in backup program NTBACKUP or with other backup programs like Arcserve and BackupExec.
For a normal restore process it could be enough if you reinstall ISA Server 2006 and import the XML backup file. In case of a complete operating system failure, reinstall the operating system, reinstall ISA Server and import the ISA Server backup file.
In this case you will lose any log files, created by ISA Server 2006. If your security policy disallows this you must back up the log files and database created by the MSDE database.
To create a backup of an MSDE database, use the OSQL utility:
BACKUP DATABASE mydb TO DISK = 'C:\MSDE\Backup\mydb.bak'

Figure 7:
Other Directories to back up
You should also back up the entire ISA Server installation directory, because if you have for an example modified the Outlook Web Access Forms based templates to reflect your corporate design, you should also back up these files.

Back up parts of the ISA Server 2006 configuration

As mentioned above, it is possible to back up parts of the ISA configuration. For example, it is possible to export the entire firewall rule base, a single firewall rule or specify parts of a firewall rule, called rule elements. It is also possible to export network objects, network rules and more.
